Inclusive privacy for at-risk and under-represented users

While many in the HCI and security & privacy community strive to improve user experiences online, there’s one notable gap: much of the research focuses on an ‘average user’ from western population, which often overlooks the needs of at-risk and under-represented user groups such as individuals with visual impairments, adolescents, and those from underrepresented regions. To address this gap, I study the privacy perceptions and behaviors of at-risk and under-represented users to make their online experience inclusive, safe, and trustworthy.

AI and Privacy Regulation

Privacy landscape has evolved globally since 2018 when the European Union-General Data Protection Regulation (EU-GDPR) came into force. However there remains a gap between high-level regulatory requirements and the ground-level implementation and adoption of privacy best pratices for emerging technologies such as AI. Through this line of research, I explore consumers’ understanding of their legal privacy rights, and industry’s response to AI and related regulation.

Internet of Things privacy

Internet-connected devices such as locks, cameras, and speakers might make a home smarter but also raise privacy issues because these devices may constantly and inconspicuously collect, infer or even share information about people in the home. In this research, I perform global policy review of privacy challenges in IoT ecosystem and explore end-users’ privacy concerns in smart home context to co-design safer smart home devices.
